The 15th Hussars depot was in Canterbury in July 1878 (the main body of the regiment was in India). Not too far from Margate.

It looks like David Hunter was invalided home from India in 1874 and spent some time in Netley Hospital before joining the Regimental depot in Canterbury late that year. He remained based in Canterbury until discharge.

This signature looks like  W D Hunter. How does it compare with the marriage registers ?

The plot thickens!

This is the marriage to Sarah Elizabeth BROWN, July 1878, as Wm David HUNTER.

But it does look like the writing is all by the same person (the curate?)

Thanks so much for your help on this :) I agree, just a bit hard to tell on the screen!

So did he lie about his birthplace? Or is it not the same chap as on the 1881 Census?

There are just so many things that line up...father Hugh, carpenter/cabinetmaker, and Mummerys Buildings in King St Margate.

And 181 High St was the address the Brown family were living at in 1871.

PS How did you get the original image??

I believe this to be David snr with his father Hugh:
1861 census – Middlesex, England
King's Arms Court, Finsbury, St Luke, Middlesex
Hugh HUNTER 50 cabinetmaker b. Ireland
Annie HUNTER 46 wife b. Ireland
Mary Ann 18 dau b. Ireland, tailoress
David 10 scholar b. Ireland<<<<
William 4 b. Middlesex city

It only just occurred to me that this is quite close to Shoreditch?!
