British War Medal - poss Canada
« on: Friday 04 November 16 16:04 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon

My cousin has this medal in her possession - I identified it pretty quickly

The edge is very worn but we believe that it reads J E Pritchard and then has 15-CAN INF 045285

Our family name is Pritchard but we do not have a J E Pritchard in it.

Could this be Canadian - they did live in Canada for a few years and may have picked it up there ?

Although it looks bronze - I think it is silver.....checking with her.

Tried searching the canadian archive - probably not very well as it was my first time and have searched ancestry but of course I do not have much information.

Can anyone help me with this - thank you very

Thank you all

It is definitely a British War Medal and Canadian Forces were entitled to it.  15 Can Inf could well be 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Expeditionary Force (it appears to be the only infantry battalion with number 15).

That said, your trawl of the Canadian records seems OK, 177 Pritchards but none with JE and trying searching on parts of the number doesn't throw up anything obvious.  I can't find a service number that starts with a zero  - any other guesses at the number?  There is a 1915 nominal roll of the battalion on line but no Pritchards on it but that is an early date.

Once you know which medal it is you can order a new length of ribbon

Good afternoon,

It will be made of silver along with the rest of the approx. 6.5 million. About 110000 were made in bronze for issue to the Chinese, Maltese and Indian labour corps.

Can we find out where in Alberta - the Canadian links we have are around Edmonton ?

Is it worth me buying some credits for a**y or FindMyPast to track him through the years - I have no idea what records are available for Canada.  I have UK subs only

That's a good spot DB.  Joined in 1915 so not on the published 1915 nominal roll,  has a sister Miss Blowdwen Roberts in Pwllelhi, I'd put my money on him wouldn't you?
