1901 & 1911 Royal Navy Census Records
« on: Monday 07 November 16 21:54 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out about my Great Grand Father Bryan Connor (or O'Connor)
According to his Daughters Birth Certificate he was retired from H.M. Royal Navy (Ireland)
According to his Marriage certificate he was living on the Ship Medusa (I think) which I presume was docked in Bantry or Glengarriff, County Cork, Ireland at the time of getting married.

Since no Bryan Connor (or O'Connor) show up in the Irish census in 1911 I take it he was on the ship when the census was taken.

If anyone can help out it would be appreciated

Thank you

Alan

Medusa   may have been the name of a shore based building?

When, and where was he born?
When did he marry?

Have you tried the UK census?

We can't look up the 1911 census for you - it's still covered by copyright ::)

A brief bit of research shows that in the Great War, there were three vessels called Medusa (source http://www.naval-history.net/index.htm).

Could you put some dates to the birth and marriage certs which may help with sorting which one it was and hence where.

Later - Forgive me I note you are referring to earlier than the great war (I think), there was a Marathon class cruiser fro 1888 to 1920, in harbour service 1910-1920.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Think you mean England and Wales  ::)

The 1901 and 1911 Irish census are online (free) but remember that people in institutions are enumerated by initials rather than name. So, try searching for B.C or B.O'C., male, with age and county of birth.

Thank you for all the responses.

I don't know much about Bryan O'Connor except he was married 5th Oct 1911 to Nora Shea in Bantry. He was 45 and she was 26. His occupation was registered on the marriage certificate as 'Sailor' and living on what looks like "Medusa Ship". His father's name was also Bryan O'Connor and his occupation was also 'Sailor', however I don't know if he was alive or deceased at the time of his Son's marriage.

On my grand mothers birth certificate a year later Bryan O'Connor's occupation is registered as 'Pensioner H.M.Royal Navy'

If the Medusa was registered as in harbour service from 1910-1920 that might tie in with him living on the ship. I just don't know how to find the crew list for this.

I did find one Bryan O'Connor in the 1901 Irish sensus in Queenstown (Cobh) and his occupation is listed as Pensioner H.M.Royal Navy.

We were always told that Bryan O'Connor was lost and died at sea some time between 1915 and 1921 but we don't know where we could find records of that.

Thank you to everyone that has responded so far

For reference, here's the marriage certificate- bride is Norah and his residence listed as Medusa ship Glengariffe:

There is a RN seaman's record for a Bryan Connor of Queenstown born Jan 1861, serving from 1876-1898 when he was invalided out.  Could this be the older of the two - the one you found in 1901?
