Thank you very much Jon!  You've put a lot of time into searching for these.  I hadn't realised these were on Ancestry,

So she was Roman Catholic.

How would this be interpreted?
"the said pauper is the lawful wife of John Fox now absent from her"

Could it mean John has abandoned her, or just that he wasn't admitted to the Work House as well (because he was in perfectly good health) and her illness means she can't live at home?

It's standard poor-law terminology for desertion. It was a criminal offence to leave a wife/family chargeable to a poor law union.

I'm a bit confused??

I have traced a relative who was has been in Friern Lunatic Asylum, but I am going round in circles, cannot find anything on National Archives even though they have a page on there it is not taking me anywhere.
Have been advised to check on Ancestry which I have but can't find a search tab for things like this?
Any idea's greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ann Bridges 1847 born in St.Neots, Huntingdonshire.
Was admitted around 1871, three years after her mother died

The records for Friern Barnet (aka Colney Hatch) Asylum are not at the National Archives, but at London Metropolitan Archives (LMA).

They are not online.

Please see my reply #2 above for further information.

The National Archives page is simply a catalogue entry, telling you where the records can be found.

Ann Bridges 1847 born in St.Neots, Huntingdonshire.
Was admitted around 1871, three years after her mother died

She wasn't a patient in the 1871 census. She was working there as a Laundry Servant.
Piece 1334 folio 131 page 39
The patients start on the next page, enumerated by their initials only.
So you are looking for staff records
