It was the workhouse, renamed  in 1930,  Shrodells, 60 Vicarage Road, a Public Assistance Institution.

Thank you Jebber, it looks possible that he went there because he was dying as he died in 1939 or that may just be a coincidence and he'd been there a long time. Something else to investigate.

RaeUk - it does take time to get used to it - at least I found so not being used to forums like Facebook etc and I'm still writing messages and deleting them by accident when trying to post them - but it is worth it as it is a friendly and helpful site.
