Cinder Merchant
« on: Monday 21 November 16 18:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I've found what I think is the marriage record of my 3x gt grandmother Elizabeth Ellis, and on this gives her father Thomas Ellis's occupation as 'cinder merchant'.  I have never heard of this occupation.  I wondered if anyone out there has.  The marriage took place in 1846, and Elizabeth signed the record with an X mark, so I don't think this family had much in the way of education.  Elizabeth married William Barraclough, a labourer.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Christine

When I was a child, the coal merchant used to deliver Coke too, I remember it was cheaper than coal.  So if not a coal merchant, perhaps a forerunner?
