What regt could he have been in?
« on: Monday 21 November 16 19:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
My uncle who was born 1917 was called up for  service in WW2.  As a young man he lost an eye in an accident but still did military service. What regt would he have possibly been in?.  I also was given to believe he was a POW  but cannot find any details of him.

You will   have to give us more information, please.

Do you know what medals he was awarded?

For those personnel serving after 1920, their service records are still with the MOD.

To apply for a copy, see:
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/overview
There will be a fee of £30.

You will need a copy of his death certificate, unless he died in service.

Dud,

I agree with KGarrad at reply#2.

Purchase your Uncle's service record and you will find out the facts, otherwise you will probably be inundated with multiple vague or irrelevant guesses, none of which is likely to be correct.

The service record should help answer all of your questions.

If you could give us more information, then we may be able to give you more help.

Do you know  whether he was in France in 1940, for instance?

Due to the fact that WW2 records are usually classified as Military, and Secret, there is almost nothing available online re WW2.

FindMyPast has some Plymouth records - Civil Defence and Honour Rolls (i.e. deaths).
Commonwealth War Graves Commission has details of deaths.
Ancestry has: WW2 Army Roll of Honour,
Military Campaign and Award Rolls,
Navy List,
Naval Medal and Award Rolls,
Royal Naval Reserve Service Records Index,
Memorial Books WW1 and WW2,
British Prisoners of War,
Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificates
Plus 1 or 2 smaller sources.

The ONLY place to get details is from the MOD, as I said earlier.
And the MOD have not released any records for public use.

They  may have been classified as   "Restricted"    or "Confidential"     at the time    but    Seventy years later     very little remains "Secret"

There are thousands of books  available.
