Tighphealie

I looked at some maps a day or two ago but couldn't see anything which looked like Tighphealie.

Annie, I think you might be on the right track - the fact that the place does not appear to be marked on any maps, may imply it is a house or farmstead which may have been locally well known but no longer survives, or was short lived, or had a name change (there are a number of scenarios).

Sadly I have misplaced a couple of good maps I had which included small farms and other buildings. I will look again later when I am on my desktop PC.

It's written in gaelic but knowing the proper meaning of 'phealie/feelie' in English may help but Mr 'Google' doesn't seem to know?

Added...It's the 'Tigh' part which points to a house/crofthouse i.e. possibly a Farm but I may well be way off the mark, just an educated guess by the name really.

Hospitality?

Sorry Skoosh, missed this earlier but well done!

Some gaelic speaking people tell me they think it may be meaning 'Taigh na Fèile' which is House of Hospitality/Hospitality House which of course sounds feasible but whether the 'na' was left out of the original name on the document (with wrong spelling which would be understandable), one has to wonder, being as he is referred to as a Tenant & Crofter?

I somehow can't imagine this being the context of the name in the query though so it's kind of a 'dead end street'.

I still believe it to have been the name of a Crofthouse/Farmhouse?

It's hard enough trying to work out English names which sound like something else so even harder when it's Gaelic which sounds like something else   

As Ruskie said though, it may well have been a small place not to have been incorporated on a map but you can let us know what the Council Office can tell you.

A pub would be Tigh Osda or Tigh Lianna, a possibility is Tigh Fail a turf house,  mebbes that's why it no longer exists?
