The Scottish Years of James and Mary Maguire (c1830s/40s - c1865)
« on: Monday 28 November 16 12:35 GMT (UK) »
James and Mary Maguire lived in Liverpool from the mid 1860s onwards and are found there in the 1871 census onwards.

However, their time before then was spent in Scotland. Their first son, James, appears to have been born there in 1860, and a daughter, Rosaria (?) in 1862 (according to the 1871 census).

James and Mary are both listed in the 1871 census as being from Ireland. His occupation was that of labourer in that census, dock labourer in 1881, and a warehouseman on ship's cargoes in 1891.

James was 40, 48 and 58 in those three census. Mary was 36, 47 and 55.

Any help in unravelling the time they spent in Scotland - and maybe locating Irish origins would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi,

Did James & Mary have any other children (born in England)?

If so what was Mary's maiden name please?

Sometimes later census' provide actual County names of where born, does this example show for any of the children born in Scotland?

Can you possibly post a snippet of the 1871 with James & Rosarie? please?

I think the name may be Rosanna/Rosanne/Rosane (various spellings) which was a common Irish girl's name?

Hi,

Yes, James and Mary had other children born in England. John was born in Liverpool in 1867, and Mary in 1870. All four lived with their parents in 1871, but only James, John and Mary were there in 1881. James Jr's origins just listed as "Scotland". In 1891, James is still there. Nothing more than "Scotland" listed for that one, if memory serves - and I hope it does!

I haven't ordered certificates, so sadly I don't know what Mary's maiden name is.

I don't have the 1871 screenshot, but it's an Newsham Street in Liverpool. James 40, Mary 36, James 11, Rosaria 9, John 4 and Mary 1. Should be easy to find if you've got the access to censuses. I have to go to the library for mine!

In order to progress, you will need Mary's maiden name.

On SP (scotlandspeople)

23 Births, James Mc/MacGuire showing Scotland 1860/1861

24 Marriages Mc/MacGuire 1855 - 1860

Added, Couldn't find a female Mc/MacGuire name beginning Ros 1860 - 1865

Yes, I'd totally failed to find the children's birth records in the Scottish records, too. Very odd. I was hoping to use those records to help me identify her maiden name, rather than the more costly English ones!

To be honest, looking at any Scottish birth at this stage would be a shot in the dark.

At least with the English births you have a trail....no trail for anywhere specific in Scotland.

I think you will have to dig deep into your pocket unfortunately & purchase an English cert.  ;)

Thanks!

But on that topic...they seem to have picked their least unusual names - John and Mary - to give their English children. I'm not quite sure where to start! There's several of both on the registration indexes that could be valid...

Have you narrowed down the index to the area where they were living in 1871?

The address on the census should give you an idea of the area/locality.
