Help to find a Post 1949 death in Ontario
« on: Wednesday 30 November 16 20:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I hope some kind soul can help if only with advice on how to trace the death and family of
Arthur Montague who died sometime after 1949.

Arthur was born in Cinderford Glos  UK in 1870 as Arthur Weaver. He departed from Liverpool in October 1911 with his wife's sister Clementina arriving in Canada aboard the Victorian around 6 November 1911.

I can find him on the 1921 census living with his wife and son Arthur V Montague born 1917 and daughter Dorothy J Montague born 1919.

The Voters lists show him up until 1949 where he was living in Grant Ave East Kent County Ontario.

I can trace Clementina up to 1957 living Haig Avenue Danforth Toronto with her daughter Dorothy with her son Arthur V and his wife Evelyn living a few houses down the road.

In 1958 Arthur V Montague and his wife Evelyn are living in Jameson Ave Parkdale Toronto but Clementina is not listed. Dorothy is not listed possibly because she has married.

Not having a clear view of Canadian records I am somewhat out of my depth. I am struggling with cemetery records as these seem patchy and the same with newspapers. I wonder if anyone can offer ideas of where I should contact to be able to get newspapers searched for an obituary.

It has taken years to find Arthur Weaver after he abandoned his wife and family who were living in Poole England and find sufficient evidence for the name change and now I am at a brick wall again trying to search down the generations to find possibly living family.

Any advice would be appreciated.

kind thanks in anticipation

Clementina's obituary appears in the Globe & Mail newspaper in Toronto; died October 7, 1957 of 52 Haig Avenue in her 78th year.  Wife of late Arthur; mother of Dorothy and Arthur Victor.  She is buried at St. John's Norway Cemetery in Toronto.

Found an obit published in the Globe & Mail of a Kathleen Louise Mahaffy in 1952 in London, England; indicates she is the sister of Arthur Montague of Toronto and D'Arcy Russell of Chicago.

You can contact St. John's Norway and see who is buried with Clementina.

Dorothy married a James Brannon and died in Burlington, Ontario in 2008;  names her late brother Arthur V. of Surrey, British Columbia and aunt of two likely living individuals, one living in Orangeville, Ontario and the other in Ottawa, Ontario. Also nieces and nephews in Scotland and New York, so likely no surviving children from her marriage.

Oh my goodness Thank you Eileen that is incredible information and you were so quick.

I will contact the St John's cemetery.

It is hoped that we can trace the descendants of Arthur V Montague as there were four children from Arthur's marriage left in the UK whose descendants would like to make contact.

Clementina had a son called Bert Baylis(s) registered under her maiden name in 1910 Poole England. It does not seem to be the case that Bert traveled to Canada with Arthur and Clementina in 1911 and we have no idea of his fate.

I have no idea whether Arthur and Clementina's change of identity would ever become known to the authorities during their lives in Canada or whether their children and family ever learnt the truth. It is not for us to judge their actions just that the descendants in England would like to find their half cousins one day.

I am indebted to you and so happy you have knocked down a large brick wall.

Kind wishes to you

Sue

Since this has been published elsewhere on the internet, I don't think it should break this forum's rules about posting about living individuals:

The Arthur Montague you found in the 1949 voters list was living in Chatham Kent County Ontario.  I think this grave is that Arthurs and not the one you are seeking.

Hello Manawakian

Thank you for your reply. The findagrave attachment is sadly for a different Arthur Montague. I appreciate you sending this though.

kind wishes

If you re-read my post you will see that I was aware that the FindAGrave listing I gave you was for the wrong Arthur.  What I was trying to tell you was that the Arthur buried in that grave is almost certainly the Arthur Montague you found in the 1949 voters list, so you can no longer assume that your Arthur was still alive in 1949, or that he ever lived in Chatham Kent County Ontario.
