BMD Certificates and Wills
« on: Monday 25 July 05 14:34 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know how I can go about ordering a death certificate from the Isle of Man?
Also where can I search for a will (if I exists!)

Thanks in advance.

Hi Molly,

Check out Brian Lawson's site (www.lawsons.ca) where an Index of Wills and Decrees for the period 1630-1920 is available.  The index provides LDS microfilm numbers for the actual wills.  Brian has also provided an index to burials on the IOM.  It is a fantastic site with many more indexes and lots of information helpful for researching IOM family history.

On Brian's SOURCES page is also this information:
Deaths & Burials
The compulsory registration of deaths was introduced in 1878. Prior to 1878 one has to rely on the record of burials in the parish register. A large number of burials seem to have not been recorded, especially for children. As for baptisms and marriages, there are many gaps and omissions.

If your person's death occurs after civil registration then the Civil Registry is the place to apply to:

Cheers,
Ruth
