Well I have had a hugely exciting break through this evening.
I was doing a look up for someone in the Dornoch MI and I copied out a grave for them and I always have a look either side to see if there is a family connection and lo there was my lost John Scott on his parents grave.
Anyway this is the MI so you see the basis for my question...
In Memory of James Scott who died at Torduff 4th July 1834 age 67 Also Dorcas Bell spouse of James Scott Torduff who died 9th April 1819 age 52. And Janet their daughter who died 6th August 1811 age 10 months. Also George their son who was lost with the crew of the Brig Village of Newcastle on Cromar Sands, Norfolk 31st October 1823 age 25 years and Jane their daughter who died at Annan 21st November 1849 age 49. And Christine daughter of John Scott of Annan who died 9th April 1823 age 10 moths. Also James his son who died at Bueonos Aires 19th May 1851 age 23 And the above named John Scott who died 17th April 1859 age 66 Also Robert Scott his son who died at Annan 21st December 1862 age 29I searched for Robert's death cert and that confirms that he is the son of my John Scott and Helen Caruthers - yippeee.
So the grave MI leads to my question there are loads of deaths at sea (Norfolk, Argentina, Shetland) how do I get info on these. A librarian mentioned Lloyds insurer's does anyone know what archive material they hold? Other than that I know it is a trawl through the papers!
What the MI doesn't say is that John Scott also died at sea
I think he drowned off the coast of Shetland, washed up on the shore - need to confirm this. Not true - that was a different John Scott!Anywho, a lot of detail for a simple question - sorry!
