Jane from Lockerbie?

All the children that I looked at have mother's mn as Carruthers. Still can't find a birth for Thomas either as Carruthers or Pattinson.

Trees on Ancestry are of little use - none have much on Jane.

Re William Wilson - census says born Cumberland. John's father was Wilson Pattinson on census so could have been named for him.

Interestingly, on the 1871 showing John and Mary Carruthers ( St Mungo), they have a son, Thomas, aged 9. Maybe that's who Jane named her son for.  Jane not with them but elder daughter Janet is.

On the 1901, Mary is  a widow living with son William and his wife, Isabella, in Motherwell

I have found a Jane Carruthers born around the right time living in the household of Minor Murch (great name if its right!) working as a dairy maid in canonbie. Perhaps John & Jane never married. I cannot find Jane in scotland after 1871 census which is hopeful............

Possible birth of a Thomas Carruthers on 5th July 1873 at Tundergarth ( three or so miles from Lockerbie) to a Janet Carruthers (illeg). Janet and Jane are fairly commonly interchangeable so I wouldn't rule out the John Pattinson/Janet Bell Carruthers marriage I detailed above. Janet Bell Carruthers does not appear to have married or died in Scotland.

I think I found that one as well

I was looking for some connection between the pair. It could be that she went south as a dairy maid/housemaid for the Pattinsons. It's not all that far. The only other thing that I can think of is either 'common law' or a Gretna marriage. I know there are records but not sure where - I think GeoffE knew of a source at one stage.

I don't think Walter Carruthers and Mary Irving had a daughter called  Jane. Can only see a Janet listed on the census.

I have found a website of a descendant of Carruthers family, I Williamson who has Janet Bell Carruthers marrying John Pattinson 5th dec 1874 at Torpenhow, which is quite near where John lived. my only problem with this marriage is the lack of familiar names but who knows Isobel, its looking like you are right, thank you.

Unless you're very sure of the information on the website, Cazza, I'd get the marriage cert to check if it's the correct John.  I'm always wary of published trees.

What puzzles me is that she is only Janet Bell Carruthers on the marriage index. In the censuses and her death in 1927, she is always recorded as just 'plain' Jane*.
