A bottle I think means a bundle, whether it was a specific measure I am not sure but it may have been.
There area couple of examples mentioned in these books;

Great. Thanks very much for this. :)

The amount he stole was worth 6d in 1878. A bottle of rum sounds more feasible, doesn't it?

Thanks. Where does it say how much he stole was worth please? I couldn't find it in the article that I read. :)

Could it have been a mis-spelling of Stroh rum?
Baskervill - Devon, Foss - Hants, Gentry - Essex, Metherell - Devon, Partridge - Essex/London, Press - Norfolk/London, Stone - Surrey/Sussex, Stuttle - Essex/London, Wheate - Middlesex/Essex/Coventry/Oxfordshire/Staffs, Gibson - Essex, Wyatt - Essex/Kent

Possible, although stroh rum is Austrian. Good in coffee but a bit strong to drink neat.
