John Rodden
« on: Wednesday 14 December 16 11:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to see if I can track this guy to Scotland. He was born in Derryford, Co. Donegal, C1891, he's on the 1901 Irish census but not 1911, nor is he on the English 1911. He joined the Royal Field Artillery in Glasgow in 1912.

Difficult to trace as there was another John Rodden who was born in Glasgow who also served and was born the same year but had different service number (Regimental Number: 69084).

I don't know how much you found for him however if its the right one there is a memorial and medal card available (Victory Medal).  He was killed in France in action in 1915.

There is 2 servants listed in Donegal in 1911 census same name and same age so cannot rule them out.  This one only being approx 15km away from Derryfad.  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Ballyarr/Grovehall_or_Newtowngrove/502718/

Nolan, Cremins & O'Connor - County Kerry, Ireland.
Keogh - Queen's County (Laois)
Stack - Limerick & Clare

Hi Mike, Thanks for that, 69084 is the right man, I have his medal card (what do you mean by memorial?) and had seen the two servants in the Donegal area, what put me off them was that John's father was a farmer and being the eldest child, I would have thought he would work on the farm with his Dad, but of course, maybe the family needed a wage and one less mouth to feed!!

Regards

Ian

John Rodden 69084 was killed in action on 1st May 1915. The Ireland Casualties of War record on Ancestry says he was a gunner Royal Field Artillary born Derryford Donegal. His war gratuities went to his father Patrick ( per Register of Soldiers Effects on Ancestry).

Can't see a connection to McGarvey family. William's wife was Rose Ann Ward

John may have been a farm labourer at time of census
