Is Paddington in Marylebone? Which Parish Records to Try (1812)
« on: Thursday 15 December 16 13:35 GMT (UK) »
So I'm still on the trail of James Cooper but London/Middlesex is confusing. I can't really work out where to look for his baptism. On his marriage record (1834) he is married in the parish of St Marylebone and recorded as being 'of this parish'. On the 1851 census he gives his birth place as St Marylebone, Middx but then in the remaining three censuses he appears in he changes his place of birth to Paddington, Middx. His wife remains consistent throughout all this stating her birthplace as St Marylebone continuously. So what made him change? We'll never know sadly. However, I would still like to see if I can find him in the baptism records but where to look? Where do the baptism records for Marylebone/Paddington live? I know it's Middlesex rather than London but where can I look for them I get very confused with the changes in parishes and civil registration districts in the London/Middlesex area. Which website is best for me to look on, Ancestry or FindMyPast?

This info may help:

Do you think his childrens' names may give an indication of his parents' names?

As far as I know, 'of this parish' does not have to mean parish of birth, just parish of residence.

Hard to tell re. Children's names. Seven children between 1835 and 1851, first child named Richard and first female child Susannah. It's always hard to tell with children. I've had families where every first born boy is named the same as the several preceeding generations and some where no names has reoccurred.

You only had to have three weeks residency to be 'of this Parish'. Frequently couples appear to resident at the same address so that they only had to pay for the Banns to be read in one Parish.

Do you know of any siblings? That can help, if you find baptisms for them. Also it is worth following up the marriage witnesses.

I know next to nothing about James Cooper, not a clue about any family. There are no Cooper's as witnesses.

Paddington and Marylebone are right next door to each other, all depends on where the imaginary dividing line between the two are, although they are London now it was in the past shown as Middlesex

St James was possibly Sussex gardens  which comes under Paddington, I think this church was used before St Mary's Paddington Green was opened circa 1845

I would say that the East  side of Edgware Road was Marylebone and the  West side was Paddington roughly, I do believe a flyover almost splits it

This baptism might also be of interest  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JMNY-RYZ   The image is on Anc and it looks as though the parents were unmarried
