Hi 3sillydogs,

I'm not sure if David did die in South Africa, as I can't find a death notice for him. I checked for possible deaths on SP in Scotland but they're all for service returns in WW1 unfortunately  :-\.

I'll have another look at the archives for any clues as to why this chap was going to be extradited.

Hi Johnf04,

I think I may have found a possible place of birth for Jeremiah. He could have come from Ballindrehid, which is in the parish of Killukin, Barony of Boyle, in Co. Roscommon. There is another possible contender (same spelling) which could be in the Parish of Kilconduff, and in the barony of Gallen, in Co. Mayo.

The registrar who transcribed the birth cert obviously didn't know how to spell an Irish place name, but it's the closest I can find that may match.

I can look at the poor law records next time I'm in the Mitchell Library, to see if Jeremiah ever applied for relief, they would give details of where he came from and other details relating to his family.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, Darylr - I'll see if I can find any sign of Farrells in Ballindrehid. It would be good if you could check the poor law records, but be aware that I've seen Jeremiah's surname spelled "FERL", "FERROLS" and "FARRELS", in different records.

Hi Johnf04,

No problem, yes I've found all sorts of records regarding the Farrell's under all sorts of different spellings. My 3 x great grandfather Thomas apparently came from Co.Monaghan, but my 2 x great grandmother Mary was born in Co. Antrim, but can't find anything to support this.

The poor law records are great for finding Irish ancestors who may have applied for help at some point. It's worth a go, you never know. What were Jeremiah's parents names ? I need some details so I find the right one.

His father was Thomas, his mother Alice (or Alison). He was in Scotland by 1829. That was the year he  married. I haven't been able to find Thomas or Alison in the 1841 census, so I assume they were dead by then.

Hi Johnf04,

I thought I'd let you know that I had a look for your Jeremiah Farrell in the Poor Law records, while I was in the Mitchell, but I'm afraid I couldn't find him. The only Jeremiah I could was born in 1874 in Glasgow.

Regards,

Daryl
