William Peck, 2nd Cheshire Regiment
« on: Friday 16 December 16 04:35 GMT (UK) »
WILLIAM JAMES NUNN HUMPHERY PECK was born in Ickleton, Cambridgeshire in 1889. Son of Charles & Priscilla Peck.

There is a William Peck b 1890 from Ickleton who is serving abroad as a Private with the 2nd Cheshire Regiment in 1911.

Is there any way I can find out if he is the same man please? If it is him can you advise me how I may be able to find out about his military career? I am aware a lot of records were destroyed in WW2 so I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks for any help offered.

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Surviving WW1 Service Records are available on Ancestry or FindMyPast.
The attestation form will show his place of birth, and possibly his parents.

Did he marry Ada Mary Waik?
If so, his records did survive - she is shown as next-of-kin.

Otherwise, look for a Medal Index Card?

Hi Malcolm

Welcome to Rootschat. It is the 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment. This is important as men enlisted in the regiment and not the battalion. So he could have been transferred to another battalion during his career.

There is a very good chance that the soldier in 1911 is the correct man. The clerk would compile the census using the Attestation Forms. These did not give date of birth only age on enlistment. The census was on the 9th of April, and the Orderly Clerk would not know (or care) that Peek was about to turn 22.

Looking at records of men of the S. Lancs. with similar numbers (particularly 65966 which is just 7 off your man, if he is yours) the theme seems to be the same. First attesting with other Regt's. receiving wounds & being transferred to the Lab. Corps. & then to one of the S. Lancs. Transport Workers Batts. for home service. All of the transfers took place April/May 1918.
Not chiselled in stone of course.
