Richard Ball/Bell
« on: Saturday 17 December 16 15:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Looking for any information on this family prior to 1851.

Richard Ball (Bell in 1851) born c 1798 in Manchester, Lancashire
His wife, Ann, born c 1808 in Macclesfield
Son, David born c 1836 in Stockport, Cheshire
Son, Joseph, born c 1838 in Stockport, Cheshire
Daughter, Ann, born c 1846 in Stockport, Cheshire
Daughter, Sarah Ann, born c 1850 in Stockport, Cheshire

By 1851 the family were living in Carlisle, where another daughter, Sarah Ann (named for first child of that name), was born there c 1855.

By 1861 they had relocated to Southwick, Sunderland. Only daughters, Ann and Sarah Ann, remained with their parents.
Sarah Ann Ball married William Stephenson in Sunderland on the 4th February 1871.

The 1871 census finds Richard and Ann still living in Southwick; Richard died in 1880, but I can't find Ann's death at all.

Nor can I find the family in 1841, nor the marriage of Richard and Ann, or proof of the children's birth/baptisms!

Can anybody help?

Sue

Hi Sue

I wonder, if there is a chance that Richard and Ann were not a couple yet, in 1841. It's possible that 1851 Census is a blended family - not as it looks on Census.

This looks like your Sarah Ann, b 1854 Carlisle.
Obtaining that Birth Cert would give the maiden name of Ann, something to start with?

FreeBMD:
Sarah Ann BELL
Birth registered Carlisle , Sep Qtr 1854

Sarah Ann BELL, chr 10 Sep 1854
Parents: Richard BELL & Ann
At Christ Church, Carlisle

Hmmm, that's interesting.....

I was trying to see if I could track the daughter Ann  BALL /BELL born about 1846.
Whilst the 1851 Census has her born Stockport Cheshire, the 1861 that Sue cites:
RG 9  Piece 3781 - Folio 99 - Pg 23
has Ann born in 'Lankishire", like her mother Ann.

Possible marriage:
Mar Qtr 1867, Sunderland
Ann BALL to either Julius PRIOR or Matthew WATSON

I can't find Julius Prior, but there is this for Matthew WATSON in 1871:

30 North Millburn Street, Bishopwearmouth
RG10  Piece 5001 / Folio 45 / Pg13
Head: Matthew WATSON 26, Glassmaker, b Sunderland, Durham
Wife: Ann 27, b Manchester
Dau: Hannah 3, b Sunderland
Dau: Elizabeth 2, b Sunderland
Son: William 1, b Sunderland
Gr-Mother: Hannah WATSON 76, b Allan Head, Northumberland

But then I lose track of this family too, after 1871.

Cheers
