Trying to find licensee of an inn in Cumberland c 1870
« on: Monday 26 July 04 22:31 BST (UK) »
I have a Mary E ?? who according to a family member was brought up in the Galloping Horse Inn, Harrington. She was born c 1867 in Distington so I need to find out who the licensee was around that time so I can find out her surname.......Any ideas?????
Thanks!

How about Richard Harkness - gleaned from the 1873 PO Directory of Cumberland from
www.historicaldirectories.org
website.

Cheers

Thanks but I have tried that and got Richard Harkness for 1873 who, according to a local historian in that area, was childless and from what he told me they had a niece called Sarah aged 13 staying there in 1884 whose family had emigrated and left her with her childless aunt & uncle. I have checked this on census. Am beginning to wonder if this Sarah isnt my Mary!

Thanks Jim but again I had found that and only Mary Ann Freers comes anywhere near the timescale and I have found Mary E in several places, so am pretty confident of the E. Also wasnt sure that being a servant there would be same as 'being brought up there' tho my Mary E was born in Distington.

Have just done a search on LDS site for Mary Ann Frears b Distington and only one it comes up with was b 1863. Could maybe she have been put on cenus as 18 and its been transcribed as 13?

OK I'm going to confuse things even more now :)

From the FreeBMD site
Births Dec 1871
Frears    Mary Elizabeth        Whitehaven    10b   539

Distington comes under Whitehaven

Going by your post in the CumberlandL mailing list

she married a James Taylor

Again from the FreeBMD site

Marriages Mar 1898
Biggar    Jane    Cockermouth    10b   825
Frears  Betsy Russel     Cockermouth    10b   825
Mitchell  John     Cockermouth    10b   825
Taylor   James    Cockermouth    10b   825

Hope this doesnt make things worse for you
Jim

 Edit/
This Elizabeth is probably the sister of the Mary you found on the 1881 census,
their mother was a Hotel Proprietress, so it all sort of fits
But you need proof

How about the easy option of checking the 1871 census as that seems more relevant than 1873 etc.  Then maybe start thinking about what the relationships there show.  Finally dont always believe family legends.  We had 13 all 13 no longer survive
