My great-grandfather was a hewer who worked in the coal mines of Consett. His brother was a "puller-up" which I don't see on the list.

Flatman. On the Mersey. Maybe not as unusual as all that but I enjoy the visual image that it conjures up.

As you will know, not at all unusual on the Mersey, as it was the local type of small boat.
