I note this baptism in the Chapelry of Halton, Corbridge

Dec 31 1897 Mary daughter of George Heron of Aydoncastle and Martha, his wife.

William

Interesting, thank you.

Quite possible he's 'my' George (right area, right time), just need to prove it beyond any doubt.

I wondered if there were any other clues, such as a mother?

This baptism took place during the Bishopric of Shute Barrington, and clergy were supposed to record the maiden surname of the mother and the native parishes of both parents.

I guess they didn't?

The only way to determine this would be to look at the parish register which is where I usually come in  ;D  However, because of the time of year I'll not be back at the archives until January.  Happy to look at them then if nothing else transpires in the meantime

I've just remembered that at this time St John Lee was part of the Peculiar of Hexhamshire which was in the Diocese of York. So not subject to the 'rules' laid down for parish register entries by the then Bishop of Durham  ::)  It only became part of the Diocese of Durham in 1837.

This will be why some of the Bishops Transcripts are held by the Borthwick Institute in York.

(Other parishes in the Hexhamshire Peculiar were Allendale, Allenheads or Allendale St Peter, Bingfield St Mary, Carrshields (or High West Allen), Hexham, Ninebanks (or Low West Allen),  St Oswald in Lee and Whitley Chapel)

Does this mean the parish register won't be at the archives?

Ps Merry Christmas all!  :)

Don't panic! Just to clarify  :D

St John Lee is in Northumberland, and always has been.

Ecclesiastically it was part of the Peculiar of Hexhamshire and in the Diocese of York until 1837, when it became part of the Diocese of Durham. (It is now in the Diocese of Newcastle, created in 1882)

If you check the 'Church Records' section of the Genuki link I gave you in reply #2 you'll see that the relevant parish registers are available at Northumberland Archives. Hopefully Christine will be able to take a look at them for you in the New Year  :D

I'm back from my Christmas travels around England and will hopefully be at the archives this coming week.  I will definitely take a look.
