William KNIGHT - ca 1765 Berden
« on: Monday 02 January 17 22:08 GMT (UK) »
Looking for baptism information on my 4th ggfather, William KNIGHT born ca 1765 in Berden.  I do not have the names of his parents.  He was buried in Berden 19 March 1839 and married there 15 Aug 1799 to Ann RAND.  They had 11 children.

Thank you for any help.

A William Knight of Richard and Sarah was baptised in Widdington, Essex on 22.04.1764, this is about 5 miles or 3 parishes from Berden.
I did come across Ann's baptism on 17.07.1774 to Jonathan and Sarah in Berden.

Mark, thank you for your speedy response!  On daughter Mary KNIGHT/RICKETT/TANT/NEWMAN she states on the immigration record to Australia that her father was a native of Berden.  However, sometimes that took in about 3 parishes or more, so I will follow the William you gave me to see where he leads.

And the added bonus of Ann RAND as well.  I did have a different date and place for her - 11 Jul 1773 at Manuden with Berden.  Looks like I will need to do some elimination to work out which one is correct.  I do appreciate your help very much.

Its more likely that his daughter didn't actually know where he was born but knew he had lived in Berden for many years and assumed he had been born there.

There was an Ann Rand baptised in Manuden on that date, parents John and Martha.
You will probably have to look at the names of William and Ann's children to help establish which is the correct Ann.
Manuden and Berden are about 2 miles apart, in the 1770's each church had its own vicar/curate.
The Manuden with Berden is probably a modern concept, as village populations decreased, small parishes were grouped together sharing 1 vicar and rotating services between the parishes, this didn't happen until the late 20th century.

Ann Knight was buried in Berden on 25.01.1844, the record says she was 69 years old.
The Manuden born Ann would have been 70, while the Berden born Ann would have been 69.
This does of course assume that all of the ages are correct.

P.S. There is a Berden burial on 15.02.1775 for an Ann, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Rand!!!!!!!!!

Mark, forgive the delay in responding.  I lost internet a while back, then my father passed away and still catching up with things.

I do appreciate all the information you have sent.
