Maclean, Outer Hebrides maybe.
« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 12:39 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for Alexander Maclean and wife
with sons John and Angus and a female.
They lived on Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1798 census. (There were also two John Macleans)
They most likely came from South Uist
area around 1790.
Others who came  were names Walker, McDonald, MacPhee, MacCormack

It is believed they travelled with priest
Angus Maceachern (later Bishop of Pei)
whose family already settled Pei in 1772 with laird John Macdonald of Glenaladale.

Thanks
Rod

Rod,  have you read "Scotland Farewell" by Donald Mackay, includes "The Hector" voyage.

Skoosh.

Hi Rod,

I don't think there's any info. this side of the atlantic for the period in question?

Records on Uist are rarer than hens teeth  :)

Sorry Skoosh,

I'm not convinced on the Hector & my reasoning would be that the emigrants of that ship landed on Nova Scotia.

My thought would be the Alexander which took 2 lots of emigrants to St. John's Island/Prince Edward Island prior to the date of the query?

It is believed they travelled with priest
Angus Maceachern (later Bishop of Pei)
whose family already settled Pei in 1772 with laird John Macdonald of Glenaladale.

The above link I posted doesn't appear to include all passengers of both journeys although connected with the "John MacDonald, eighth Laird of Glenaladale" movement.

 ;D

Skoosh,

It's quite possible they did go on the Hector & moved location later hence my 'I'm not convinced' which was more of an alternative without any real proof.

Annie,
The Alexander is the ship Angus Maceachern's father Hugh and family came over on.
Angus was 14 in 1772 and stayed behind to be trained in the priesthood.
He came in 1790 with 230 more settlers, but the name of the ship is not known.

I would say both could be ruled out on that query then as the Hector was 1773, the Alexander was 1769 & 1772 I think?

This is a great site (non active but still open) & worth a read through.

https://westernisles.wordpress.com/

Sadly the guy who owned the site passed away a couple of yrs ago, a Uist man who was a Doctor living in Ireland.

Rod,

Do you have any reason to think the MacLeans may have been from Uist or elsewhere & where would you have thought if not Uist?

Name not too common on Uist.
