There is a burial 9.2.1834 at St Bartholomew's Penn of a Maria Meddings aged 21 of Upper Penn so you might be right about the first marriage

On Familysearch there is a baptism 18.2.1833 of an Anna Meddings at Upper Penn parents John and Maria

Many Thanks for your replies, I feel there must be something there especially with Maria. Was there any children do you know? I notice on the 1841 census that John and Harriet had children Martha born 1827 and Hannah born abt 1833 then came Joseph 1838. As Martha was born 10 years before John married Harriet Clemson I think he was previously married, it's just who to. Perhaps there is a Baptism for Martha and Hannah somewhere?

I have worked out that it was Maria Fellowes who married John Meddings in 1832 then had Hannah but Maria died in 1834. Which leaves me now with who did John marry first the mother of Martha?

Martha dau of John and ANN Meddings bapt. 11 May 1828, father a labourer.

Think this is the first marriage ( his signature is certainly similar) ~ although transcribed as MEDDENS in the Banns record, he signs Meddings

At LEIGH, Stafford after Banns 21 May 1827

John Middings married ANN LOVETT, both signed register
Witnesses: Margaret Lovett and Samuel Atkins

The marriage prior to John and Anns in the register took place 27 April 1827 and was between JOSEPH MEDDINS and Sarah Burton, YOUR JOHN MEDDINGS is one of the witnesses along with an Elizabeth Atkins ~ so Joseph could be a possible relation.

Burial St Mary Blymhill Sylvia Meddings 30.4.1853 aged 84 (b c1769)

William and Sylvia are on the 1841 census in Blymhill down as Meddins with loads of other Meddings families living in the same street

Thanks everyone for this information. I think William and Sylvia were john Meddings parents, with Joseph a possible Brother of John. Ann Lovett was the first wife of John Meddings.

The signatures that I've seen of Johns do seem to be of the same man from the registers I've seen too.
