Thank you for the replies
He was quite young when he married for 2nd time...are you getting his birthplace from census
records?
Jackie
Yes, sorry Jackie I should have typed Thomas' birth year as 1785, which gives him enough time to have been widowed by 1816
I got the place and year from the 1851 census when he is a coal dealer living in Birkenhead
According to 1851 census..Thomas was born c.1785
There's this..
Baptism All Sts Bloxwich 17th May 1787 Thomas Wilks -parents Matthew + Hannah
Bloxwich about 2-3 miles from Essington
Jackie
Jackie I had come across that one and am thinking this is my best bet at the moment. There was a Hannah Philips Wilks buried in Ulverston in November 1823 aged 2, the abode listed is Sandside which consists of about four houses and Thomas was living there in January 1824 when Samuel James was baptised. I can't find a baptism for Hannah Philips Wilks but her birth would have been around the time Thomas went bankrupt in Liverpool so maybe couldn't afford a baptism (?) or too busy organising a move to Ulverston
I will have to search for a marriage for Matthew Wilks and Hannah
It would make sense for him to christen his first daughter after his mother.
You will need to consult the parish registers for Bushbury - Essington wasn't a parish in it's own rights until 1934. Bushbury (1662 onwards at Staffordshire Archives - BTs at Lichfield) only has records from 1788 on-line - no sign of Thomas Wilks (variable spelling).
Thanks BumbleB, looks like I will struggle to find a baptism or parents marriage online
