Ancestry "Sherlock" mail shot
« on: Monday 09 January 17 09:00 GMT (UK) »
I just got an email from Ancestry subject "Are you your family's sherlock?" essentially asking me to help other Ancestry members with their research.

"On our Facebook page we’re posting family mysteries that have unravelled and need solving. You can help by responding with new leads on where to continue the search on Ancestry. "

It appears that Ancestry wants me to provide unpaid labour that they will doubtless advertise as a feature of their service.

Even worse, when I follow their link, I just end up at their basic Facebook page, where (as far as I can see) no mysteries have been posted.

So - at least their slave labour scheme isn't working.  :)

In terms of genealogists helping each other for free, I'll stay on the best free, public site - ROOTSCHAT!

I think they've sent it to all subscribers. I don't do Facebook! Perhaps someone who does could post suggesting that there are a number of existing well respected free sites such as Roots Chat who are already available to help with people's family history brick walls.

I was puzzled about that email as well. As you say, the link appears just to take you to their FaceBook pages, where all the chat seems to be about DNA testing and moans about people not sharing their trees.

Anything using the word "Facebook" goes straight in the bin. Judging by the number of emails I'm invaded by, Ancestry is clearly struggling to sell their DNA.

I got that email too. I didn't click on the link, as I have better things to do than go on Facebook (like visiting Rootschat :D)

Looks like the mail shot pre-dated putting up the first case.

Idiots!
