East Middlesex regiment
« on: Thursday 12 January 17 20:02 GMT (UK) »
??? MY husband had a relative in this regiment in 1851 & in the census it gives his occupation as weaver,  I also notice that several of the other men had what appear to be jobs not particularly associated with soldiering .He spent time in Wales, England , Jamaica  & the Malta,so my question is did the army weave its own cloth then ? Can anyone help?

Hi Dawn

No. The occupations listed against soldiers is what they did before serving. Most censuses do not include trades. It is just how this particular Regimental Orderly Clerk interpreted the census instructions. Wrongly, but it gives extra information

It is often better to use the 77th Regiment when searching before 1881. They moved to Plymouth the month after the census.

 Hi,
Many thanks for that certainly had not come across that before .
Husbands relative was discharged soon after in Plymouth ,classified as unfit to serve due to health.
