Robert Graham and Family 1883
« on: Saturday 14 January 17 16:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I am looking for more information on what happened to my GGGrandad and family

I found that they went to New Zealand on 21 Oct 1883 on the ship Taranaki

Robert (b1844), Rebecca (b1834), Myrus (b1865), Joel (b1868), John (1871), Sam (b1875) and James (b1877)

to  Caterbury NZ to work at the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills

I would like to know

anything else about the woollen mills
where they lived
if any had family
if any died in NZ
Who returned (as i know my GGrandad Myrus must have)

Returned to where as you haven't given any details of where they originated from?

There is a birth for Myrus in 1865 in Huddersfield and a marriage in 1864 Robert Graham/Rebecca Lumb also in Huddersfield

GRO maiden name search on Myrus shows mmn as Lamb

Hi Carole
Previous post covers the family up to the 1881 census living Huddersfield area - mothers maiden name was Lumb.  Myrus apparently came back to the UK, what happened to the rest of them  :-\

http://libraries.waimakariri.govt.nz/heritage/places-of-the-waimakariri/kaiapoi/history-of-the-kaiapoi-woollen-mills
 - general history

1898 marriage - Joel Graham, son of the late Robert Graham of Kakapoi:
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TS18980104.2.16?query=Joel%20Graham
Listed as "of Belfast"?

Unfortunately it seems the family went through some tough times. In 1888 Robert committed suicide:

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TS18881008.2.48
His wife had been dead "some time". Sons James and John were still living with him.

 - there's a possible death for Rebecca in 1886 here, age matches up.

Robert and Rebecca are buried at St Bartholomew's Anglican Church Cemetery, Kaiapoi. There is no headstone, and the area has been grassed over.
