FORDHAM, Eliza & Emma, Newmarket Union Workhouse 1840s
« on: Monday 16 January 17 13:35 GMT (UK) »
At the 1841 England Census, Eliza Fordham, age 13, and her sister Emma, age 5, (both born in Swaffham Bulbeck) were in the Newmarket  Union Workhouse. Their mother, Frances, had died in 1839 and their father Timothy, was convicted of killing two sheep in March 1840 and transported to Australia.

Are the workhouse records for this time available? If so, I would be very pleased if someone could find out when they entered and left the workhouse and if here is any other pertinent information available in the records.

Both girls eventually came to Australia in 1856.

Thank you.

Emma Fordham.

All I can up with is that she may have been living with an Uncle in 1851 in Swaffham Bulbeck. There is couple of years disparity in her age but its not a common name and the location fits.

Edward Fordham   44
Ruth Fordham   42
..................................
Emma Fordham: 13
Relation: Niece
Born: Swaffham Bulbeck.

The Cambridgeshire Record Office has workhouse records that include dates of birth, creeds etc.
listed on the web page as being in the search room.
Haven't found any online as yet.

Added
1851 Eliza Fordham age 21 servant born Little Swaffam in household of James Catton on Sussex Street, Cambridge.
The age is off however she married Charles Banyard 1854 and on the passenger lists
both say they are of Little Swaffam.
Also Emma Fordham who is on the same passenger list also says born Little Swaffam.
Both women give parents as Timothy Fordham who is already in Tasmania and mother Frances, deceased.

I have found a bit more information; Edward Fordham who is mentioned in the 1851 census was Eliza's father Timothy's older brother-he was baptised 22/2/1795. There was one other brother as well named William Fordham, baptised 7/9/1800. The  parents of Edward, William and Timothy were William Fordham and Sarah. Eliza was baptised 25/10/1829. Mother Frances was 31 years old when she died.
regards.

Thanks very much,  paco.

I found the Bishop's transcript images for Swaffham Bulbeck on FamilySearch recently and saw most of your information. Timothy had two brothers named Edward. His older brother was born and died in 1795. In 1807 his younger brother was born and he survived to the 1851 census.

I shall have to look up the Help and find out how to close this topic off now.

Thank you all for your help.
