The Children's Aid Society - British Home Children (Canada)
« on: Friday 20 January 17 14:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi!

Has anyone researched an ancestor sent to Canada by 'The Children's Aid Society'?  I have an ancestor who was and I'm trying to find out more.  I believe the records are held at the Met. Archives in London.  Is that right?  If so, has anyone been?  How detailed are the records?

Thanks  ; :D

No, the records at LMA are administrative.

Records of individual children in the care of the CAS are now held by Barnardo's, who offer an excellent, fee-based service.

Thanks. That's interesting. I've already approached Barnardo's and they have no record of my ancestor. They also didn't mention The Children's Aid Society as being one of the organisations in their files.

I was told (by another person) that the CAS worked with Shaftesbury and all the records were at the LMA. Now, I'm not sure where to look.

This page refers to the CAS records, citing Barnardo's as the holders ...

Could there have been confusion with the 'similarly named organisation based in Canada'?

Where did your reference come from?

Rootschat have a database for Special Interest Groups (DBSIG) - British Home Children - You can add your own names to this.

Many children were sent to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America by various institutions and Childrens' Homes in the UK.

In this database you can search by Surname, County, Ships' names, etc. for
"British Home Children"
and you can also find out which other RootsChatters are researching them

Thanks, Sandra. I tried adding details to the database, but it wouldn't let me.
I know which ship, when, the sending organisation: CAS. I just need to get his records.

I think it's because I'm new, Sandra. I followed the same process as above a few times.

Don't think that should make a difference - try contacting Berlin Bob on the link - am sure he will sort it out for you.

If you want to give the names we can search in Canada for you.
