Norham Castle ,Crew Agreements,etc
« on: Friday 20 January 17 15:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I understand The National Archives holds details for the above vessel O.N. 87101,built in 1883.I'm particularly interested in who was on board during the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in the same year.
Is it straight forward to order all the relevant documents for that voyage?
Many thanks.

If it is relevant, according to the Birmingham Daily Post - Monday 27 August 1883, the Norham Castle arrived in Plymouth Sound on August 26th 1883, and the Krakatoa volcanic eruption took place on the 27th August.

I believe that particular Norham Castle was a sailing vessel with the same name. The one I'm interested in was a steam ship captained by Sampson, who was in close proximity to the eruption. His comments about the eruption are on various websites.

You should be able to get hold of the relevent crew agreement here.

I think they charge $C40 for a search. Just be sure to give them the dates you are concerned with.
