George is the youngest brother of my 3x great grandfather. I was filling in blanks in my family tree when I came across the mystery. I only have UK subs for ancestry so I'm unable to view the information on his first marriage. According to an online tree his first wife was born in India. Father's name Vincent Sprent. The marriage is also on family search. I have not located a suitable death for his first wife yet. Reading his 12 year service papers available on findmypast he had quite a time out in India and survived both syphilis and Gonorrhea. She may have died of a disease out there. But that does not explain the name change. He achieved promotion throughout his career. On his original sign up he lists his next of kin including Richard my 3grandfather so I know it's the right family. I might send for the marriage certificate to see who he down as his father.
Regards panda

The details of the 1901 marriage are on FindMyPast. It gives father as Samuel Button and George's occupation as Driver N W Railway. On his army discharge in 1899 it says intended place of residence N W Railway , Quetta. There were 2 children of this marriage :
Aubrey Hector b 1906 Quetta
Samuel George b 1903 Quetta  ( baptisms on FindMyPast also )

Edit : sorry , see you have the marriage already.

Glad you've solved your George Button mystery. However, that still leaves the other one who died in WW1  doesn't it, why did he assume a different name, probably something we'll never know.

There are newspaper reports in 1910/11 of an Edith Lilian Ball and her brother William Henry Ball tried and convicted of "an offence against public morals". One report states they lived in Walthamstow , where the birth of Constance Edith was registered in 1908.

Edith Lilian who was with George Pearson/Button did have a brother, William Henry , who was born in 1869 in Australia. Their parents were William Gwyllam Ball and Sarah Campbell. William Gwyllam was an army man and William Henry also served from 1884 to 1907 in the 1st Battalion , Royal West Kents . If Edith and William are the couple in the newspaper reports that would be a powerful reason to assume new names but I still don't understand why the change from Pearson to Button. William Henry Ball was sentenced to 3 years penal servitude and I presume he would not have been accepted back into the Army under his own name with that record.

Thanks for that, the case went to the Old Baily and makes interesting reading 8) :o
If that is the case it could explain why but he listed her as his next of kin and his medals were sent to her.

Have found another record for the other George Button on findmypast where he is discharged as a colour Sargent in 1909 again it says alias Charles Pearson. So he was assuming the alias long before he reinlisted in 1914.
The hunt continues
