could she actually have named her Grandfather to cover for her illegitimacy?

Illegitimate children often "made up" a fathers name by using a real relatives name or by simply making up a name and occupation.  They did it to appear "respectable" as illegitimacy was not as acceptable as it is in todays society.

Also in 1949 I've found William Shevatt aged about 40 with daughters Mary Ann 9, Ellen 8 & Susan 6.

Are any birthplaces shown on that entry

CaroleW: sadly,  No places of birth are shown in the entry, there is very little info in the workhouse record

Deaths June qtr 1848
Ellen Shevatt  Islington  3   197

GRO search shows she was 38

Also

Deaths September qtr 1848

GRO search shows she was 10 but I can't see a birth registration for her if she was born England

Thanks CaroleW,
1911 Census looks like a clearly written James - 2 brothers born close together?

What, at 28, Sutterton Road, Islington?
In 1901 Thomas Murphy is with his Widowed Sister Ellen Shevatt 57 at 28, Sutterton Road along with her daughter and family Ellen Whines?
Census ref RG13/172/136/26

Also, if the Mary Ann who married the Michael Quinlan birth age is correct, would I also be correct that the Workhouse Records with William etc should be 1849 not 1949?
What happened to Susan?

Also Ellen b c 1867 Islington in 1881 census?

The marriage of Thomas Murphy to a Mary must surely hold clues?

Ive just come home and opened computer - thank you for all the replies
Re Mary Ann's marriage to Michael Quinlan - I had found that but wasn't sure so good to see I was on the right lines.
Re Susan Shevatt:
I have found an 1891 Census showing her (age46) as a visitor - Nurse at 51 Chester Sq (St George Hanover Square) Belgrade.
I also found a 1921 Probate record showing Susan Shevatt, spinster of 5 Wilton, Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, died 10/11/1921.  Effects of £137 to cemetery supervisor.
