Ellen born 1867 was illegitimate and given that her mother had at least 2 other children it would not be surprising to find several WH entries for her

I cannot find the original 1871 image on Ancestry to check her marital status but think I may possibly have found Ellen snr on the 1891 transcribed as Shilliot.  She is living alone - aged 48 - single and born Cork - address 112 Gillespie Rd Islington

Thanks CaroleW,
1911 Census looks like a clearly written James - 2 brothers born close together?

1911 Cencus states Ellen was born Islington - may she be not telling truth and actually born a Ireland?

Still sadly can't find anything for the Shevatt / Whines marriage

Think you mean Murphy

Most unlikely there was a marriage given the number of illegitimate children born to Ellen snr

IF - there was a marriage - it may have been in Ireland but given that Ellen was born around 1843 and child Mary Elizabeth was born 1865 with no maiden name shown - I very much doubt it

Ellen is lodger unmarried age 40 occupation none born Cork Ireland

Surname difficult to accurately decipher if you are looking for it to be Shevatt.  Start of the word is clearer "She or Sha"
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Hi Carole, the 1891 is more than likely the one in Sutterton Street, with brother Thomas Murphy, he lived at that address from the 1871 census occ Cab Driver/Hackney Cab Driver and Elm Street, Holborn 1861married to a Mary?

Keyboard86 that looks promising - I couldn't find 1871 - 91 Census.

I have tracked an Ellen Shevatt through the Workhouse 1845, 48, 49, 51, 52, 53, 54, 68 and 71 with daughter Ellen jnr who would appear to be illegitimate.
Also in 1949 I've found William Shevatt aged about 40 with daughters Mary Ann 9, Ellen 8 & Susan 6.

Ellen Shevatt (snr) is living with married daughter Ellen and family 1901 & 1911 census and electoral register through 1920's to her death in 1928.

'Brother' Thomas Murphy is Head of household with them 1911 and for a few later years but then William George Head is heading the household for a few years and the latest  year I found it is Percy Johnson.

Could referring to Thomas Murphy as her brother be a lie?
Ellen Shevatt jnr names William Shevatt (dec'd) as her father on her marriage certificate - could she actually have named her Grandfather to cover for her illegitimacy?

Many thanks
