1841 census for Hellesdon
« on: Saturday 04 February 17 16:42 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if the 1841 census for Hellesdon is complete?

I am particularly looking for Amy Howard born around 1774. She is a widow by this time.

I have her on the 1851 census in Hethersett.

Many thanks

Thanks for that but I'm afraid it isn't her.

My Amy was born in Suffolk and the other name doesn't ring any bells.

Amy was the widow of David Howard, farmer and mill owner of Hellesdon.

She died in Hethersett but was buried with David in Hellesdon.

Do you have their wills.
Norfolk Record Office
David Howard 1838 farmer of Hellesdon Ref: NCC will register Skepper 355

Amy Howard 1857 of Hethersett its on Norfolk sources but I think I missed a page. She names her son Jeremiah Howard and Henry Newman her son in law as executors.
Daughter Sarah Ann Howlett wife of George Howlett of Brooke, Grocer, best bed bolster and pillows, this is where I think I missed a page as it goes onto the swearing of oath re probate.

NFHS

Sacred to the memory of David Howard died 2 December 1836 age 62. Amy Howard his wife who died 23 March 1857 age 84.

David Howard first married Sarah Wilberly 14 August 1800 at Hellesdon, she was buried 29 June 1801 at Hellesdon.

I would keep the Heigham 1841 in mind, nothing on census is 100% certain. Amy has a daughter Sarah Ann who marries George Howlett 6 April 1847 at St Paul, Cannonbury Islington.

Many thanks for the posts, I appreciate your help.

Sorry Yokel, I shouldn't have dismissed your suggestion out of hand. The thing that threw me is the reference to Heigham. I can't find it on my road map. Is/was it anywhere near Hellesdon?

I have both David's and Amy's wills. As his will states Amy has occupancy of the farm until the end of the lease I had thought she went from there to Hethersett where one of her sons and family also lived.

The reference to the bolster in Amy's will amused me, I think my gran had one. Cant imagine that one being passed on!

Is there any way of finding out online when the lease on the farm came to an end and who took it over?

Regards
