Looking for help with my Grandfather.
« on: Sunday 05 February 17 10:50 GMT (UK) »
My Grandfather Joseph Harris was born 8 January 1910. Joseph was born in the infirmary part of the Birmingham Workhouse in Dudley Road. His birth was registered by a T.M. Hardie who was the Master of the Infirmary at that time. He was married to Doris May Owen, they married on 16 Dec 1935 in Birmingham Registry Office. I know they were not together when I was a child, as I only met him once. I am interested to find out what happened to him and when he died. I have tried looking for him and not got very far, so he is a mystery. His father was William John George Harris and Mother Rose Stamford.
Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Hello Haedi
I have just had a look at the 1939 Register. There is a Joseph Harris b1910 in Birmingham with Doris M b 1914.
Is this your man?

Do you mind telling us your year of birth, or tell us the year that you met your grandfather?

Is your parent or any of their siblings still alive and may they be able to help you with information about their father?

Hi Jackiemh.
Thank you for your message. It is possible, but his birth date was the 8 January 1910, of course either way it could be a day or two out on records. So it is possible.

Hi Ruskie. I was born 21st April 1962. I cannot remember the year I met him, but I would have been about 10 years old.
I am told that he was in WWII and the reason that he and my Grandmother split, was because he came back from the war a different man. Unfortunately I am not in touch with the family at all.

Hi Ladyhawk.
Thank you for that information.
I wonder if he went on to have other children.
I know he had my mother Janet Margaret Harris, My Aunt Joan and my uncle Jonathan before they split up.

You have the same birth day and month as the Queen.  ;)

Do you know if your grandparents divorced?

Hi Ruskie.

Yes I am on the Queens and my brother is on Prince Phillips  :o.

I have a feeling they never got divorced, well that was the story in the family, but I am not sure. I know if that could make it difficult to find out if he had any other children or relationships.

Perhaps if you obtain his death certificate the informant might be a family member, it
should also give an address and his occupation

You could check Electoral Rolls to see who was living at that address

 ;D

Did Joseph have an older brother George and an older sister Rose? If so they are on the 1911 census in Birmingham with Father William.

I know you are looking for Joseph's whereabouts between his separation and his death but I thought the above might add to the bigger picture if you don't already have the information.

Depending on how interested you are in his military service, you can apply for his service records but it will cost you £30. There may be some clues there about the time he spent in WW2 which may confirm the family stories. Let me know if you would like information about how to apply for his service records.

What was Joseph's occupation?
