Family surnames being researched ...
Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson
Drummond, Laing, Pearson, Tulloch ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more!

This is maybe how you cant find their marriage going by the passenger list leaving the UK the address as shown as 12,Queen Mary Avenue Bata Estate Tilbury Essex
There is a marriage for a Margaret  W C Wannan July -September 1956 Thurrock Essex
Spouse name Miecyslaw Szylin
Birth for son won't post name as still living  April-June 1957 Thurrock Cambridgeshire Essex mother's maiden name Wannan ...Might be worth checking  :)
Rosie
Thanks Rosie  :)

"Spouse name Miecyslaw Szylin"  ??? ... Doubtful if it's not them! I wonder if he changed his name before sailing off  to Australia?

It certainly looks like them only other thing would be to order the marriage certificate ...Think he has changed his name .. ;)

Methinks the thot plickens ...  :o

Ancestry.co.uk has two records of their son's birth in Thurrock, Essex, England; one surname as 'Mieczyslaw' and another as 'M Szylin.'  In both instances the date - Apr-Jun 1957 - and maiden surname - Wannan - of mother correspond.

Is M not the sons middle name ? Ancestry also has 2 passenger lists one for 14 August 1959 and one for 5 June 1963( Freemantle passenger lists )

Hi again Rosie

Could be that the son kept 'Mieczyslaw' as a middle name.  Would the family have emigrated to NSW via Fremantle?

I've managed to download and edit (for my own benefit) the manifest for the S.S. "Orion" voyage in 1959 so the Fremantle information may just duplicate it.  I'm looking into them anyway.

This site http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/ gives the son's middle name and date of birth - assisted passage migration scheme.  Just type melvin wilmont into keywords.

Hi Ros - sorry for the delay in responding, but a night's sleep intervened  ;)

The record more or less explains everything.  I've posted off the suggested letter this morning so I'll just have to wait and see if there's going to be a reply.
