James E Holt - Macclesfield
« on: Tuesday 26 July 05 22:02 BST (UK) »
I have found reference to the birth of a James E Holt between the years of 1837 to 1839, Sutton, Cheshire East. who I believe to be my gggrandfather on my mothers side.

I know that by 1881 he had moved with his wife Mary and family to Stoke-on-Trent working on the railways.

Would love to know more about him, does anyone have access to any earlier census records that they could check out for me please.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Joe

Thanks for the information. But I am a bit confused.

On the 1881 census james appears to have another daughter, Amelia who is 17 so where did she go in 1871? any suggestions?

No mention of Sarah then either but I guess she may have died young, will look into that.

Hi
I have looked at the 1851 census and BMD records for Macclesfield and found the following information, with the help of a birth certificate for James Edward you should find his parents were George and Mary Holt ( Thompson) they married in 1838 and had James E c1838 and Johnathan c1841. Mary died aged 32 in 1848,and George then married again Mary Sherwin in 1853.

1861 RG9-1942-Folio65  St Georges Street Leek and Lowe Staffs

George Holt head 45 Silk steward born Macclesfield
Mary            wife 36                                    ~
George Henry son 3                               Leek
Selena            daug 8 months                   ~

1871 RG10-3670-Folio50  113 Hurdsfield Road Macclesfield

George Holt head 56 silk steward Macclesfield
Mary            wife 47                             ~
George H     son 12 silk piecer            ~
Selina          daug 10                           ~

It seems that the birthplace details are wrong on the 1871

1851 HO107-2159-F369  York Street Macclesfield

Johnathon Holt head 49 millman silk Macclesfield
Elizabeth           wife 48                        ~
George             son 30   overlooker
Mary Ann          daug 21 silk piecer
Henry               son 24 millman
James Edward  son 12
Johnathon         son 10

The 1851 shows the ages for Elizabeth and and Johnathon senior as being ten years younger than they actually are, also James and Johnathon junior as sons, but I think that should be g/sons.

I would suggest that you obtain a birth certificate to verify the above info.

In the 1861 census that Joe found the granddaughter Lydia is the daughter of Charles Holt, another of Johnathon and Elizabeth's sons.

If you need any other specific info please ask, in the meantime if I can find them in 1841 I will post it up.

Hi
Unfortunatly the 1841 is not name indexed and some pages cannot be read so searching may take some time, I did a search of the same area that they were liveing in in the 1851 and found.

1841 HO107-131-04-Page9  Pickford Street Macclesfield

George Holt 26 silk steward  all born in county
Mary            24
Eliza              1

Not to far away I came across a Lydia Holt which for reasons of the uncomman first name may be of interest. Living with her is a Betty Taylor (widow), who from marriage records was Elizabeth Holt who married 1823 a Thomas Taylor at Prestbury.

HO107-131-19-Page5  King Street Macclesfield

Lydia Holt 75 independant  not born in county
Betty Taylor 36 widow born in county
Lydia  ~       10 silk hand
Maria ~         7
George ~      5

I will keep my eyes open for Johnathan and family when I am searching.

Hi Peterbennet

Thanks for all that info.

I take it from all that, that when George remarried his sons from his first marriage remained with their grand parents.

Is everyone's family as confusing as mine on all sides? :)

Hi
No they are not all as confusing, what makes yours a little difficult is that the census details are not as accurate as they should have been, hence the reason I suggest you obtain a certificate or two just to comfirm what as been found.

It does seem that the children stayed with thier grandparents when George started a new family. According to BMD records George and Mary had a daughter Eliza in 1840 who died after the census in 1841.

regards
