One Ancestry tree has a brother James to my Thomas being married to a Mary Tweedie.  This tree says James died in 1889, so I purchased the death cert.  It confirms Mary Tweedie as wife, but says this James' parents were James Haddow and Margaret Greenshields.
Looks like a classic case of someone making assumptions without checking the original sources.

Sorry to harp on about this, but never trust any tree you find on A******y or any other web site. Use them as a pointer what to check, but expect to find errors like this.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

William and Christina's son, James, was apparently killed in action at Ladysmith on 6th January 1900.

Anglo-Boer War records concur with this date, and have him listed as a Corporal in the Imperial Light Horse regiment.

In 1871, there is a London born Mary Haddow with the James Haddow family group in Lesmahagow. She is listed as 'niece'. By 1881, she is listed as 'daughter'.

Can see a Mary Ann Haddow born 1868 in Bethnal Green district, but she is still in that area at later Census.

By 1891, the Mary 'niece/daughter' (was she their child or 'adopted' ?), seems to be married to a Walter Ferguson, and both plus children, are visiting with James and Margaret in Lesmahagow..

Motherwell Times and others in November 1895 has:

Quote
asleep in Jesus. At Brisbane, Australia, on the 3rd inst., Walter Ferguson, aged 29 years, eldest son of John and Elizabeth Ferguson, Highfield, Motherwell, beloved husband of Mary M'Connachie;

The Walter of 1891, based on occupation and place of birth, seemed to be same Walter with parents John and Elizabeth Ferguson in 1881 at Merry Street, Dalziel.

Despite Mary being noted as 'M'Connachie', it might be worth following through to see if this is the same couple as Walter Ferguson and Mary 'Haddow', as so far I can't tie them down in the 1901.

Can see a Walter Ferguson, Mrs Ferguson and children Mary, Elizabeth and Maggie heading to Australia in 1895.

The Walter and Mary visiting at the Haddows in 1891, had daughters Mary and Elizabeth whose ages match those travelling. The Walter who died in Brisbane had a youngest daughter, Maggie, aged 3 who died 2 days after he did, whose age matches the Maggie travelling.
