Help finding the FATHER of my Great grandfather?
« on: Thursday 16 February 17 16:16 GMT (UK) »
Wondering if anyone could help me on how i would go about finding any information on my Great Grandfathers (Henry Leonard Squires) Father (William Henry Squires)

The only information i have of William is what his occupation was in 1935 which states him as being a Ship Builder. This is stated on Henrys marriage certificate. I have nothing else to go on except that. I know that Henrys mums maiden name was Hill and have tried searching for marriage records, a few came up but i am worried that they might be the wrong people. Its also hard as Henry was born in 1914 so that rules out the 1911 census. I could really do with finding an occupation record if there would be one. If anyone could help me?

Perhaps a good starting point might be the 1909 marriage between William Henry Squires and Ann Hill in Oxford.  You could have a look and see if you could identify them on the 1911 census to have a look at the profession of William.

FWIT there's a tree on ancestry with this
William Henry Squires
Birth:  April 1883 (Apr 1883) - Warwickshire
Death:  12 Mar 1936 - Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England
Marriage:  1910  - Headington, Oxfordshire
Spouse:  Jane A Hill

Have you got Henry Leonard's birth certificate? That will tell you William Henry's occupation in 1914 [he may not have reached the heights of ship building then] as well as his mother's full name.  You can get it from the GRO for £9.25.

Yes that would probably be mine. With me only having that piece of information on the marriage certificate i am very sceptical on getting the wrong information on just hints. That is why i have not gone back any further on the tree as i want to make sure i have the correct people. The Jane A Hill is probably inconrrect and could be now Ann Hill.

There is an army service enlistment  record for him, though I don t think he served much time.
William Henry Squires 10006 General Service(infantry)
Occupation labourer
States he was born Birmingham and was 31 yrs 8 days on 29 Aug 1914
Definitely him, as mentions wife A Squires(address Portsmouth) and sons William 3yrs and Henry 6months.
