Woolwich. London/Kent
« on: Tuesday 27 July 04 14:08 BST (UK) »

I hope to be at the Greenwich heritage centre later this week. I emailed regarding what they had and received the following reply.

> The earliest census for Woolwich is 1841 and they are name indexed for
> 1841,51,81 and 1891. They are all street indexed.

So, get your requests in early. I won't be able to do that many. There may be
indexes for other local towns too, so some of you may want to chance your arms.

Personal message or posting on the census request board please.

Pauline

Pauline, ;D

I would suggest it would be easy to miss a request on the census request board,  would it not be easier to have your replies all to this message,  and have them all in one place?

Hello Pauline:

Thank you for the offer.  I am chasing the Keast family in Woolwich.  Ellen Mary was born about 1850 to a Royal Artillery gunner at the local barracks, Samuel, who hailed from St Germains, Cornwall.  Big mystery is Ellen (aka Eleanor)'s mother, variously known as Elizabeth from Plymouth, or Ann Thomas or McCormack.  Maybe you can unravel the mystery with the '51 census.

Many thanks if you can oblige, Pauline,

Gordon Fairbairn

The mother of little ellen was described as Head-of-house, Soldier's wife, from Plymouth, Devon. No other info in there.

Hi Pauline,

Thank you for the swift reply!!   But how unusual to say 'head of house, soldier's wife, and where she was from - yet not name her!   I think the enumerators deliberately set puzzles for all us searchers 150 years later lollllllll.

The mystery goes on.

Kindest regards,

Gordon.

Hi Thank you for the kind offer,

1. Am looking for marriage of James Mitchell and Margaret Millicent Lowery Sudds in Dec Qtr 1894 in Woolwich Reg Dis possibly in Plumstead. Especially need address and father of James and fathers occupation. The name of the church will allow me to follow other badly needed leads.

But especially need:

2. Baptism of James Thomas Mitchell born 14 Aug 1896 West Plumstead
again same info if possible please.

3. 1861 census of Plumstead
looking for James Mitchell aged about  16, possibly born in Plumstead or might show as Gravesend.

Appreciate anything you can do to help our family solve these puzzles.

Sincerely
john

Hello Pauline,
Interested in any Chasteauneuf names from 1841 Woolwich census, especially (who are hopefully all together):
Louis Leon Chasteauneuf born 25 Dec 1787 Paris, Seine, France. Died 25 Sep 1854 Greenwich, Woolwich, Kent.
Leon Eugen Chasteauneuf born 25 Oct 1820 Woolwich, Kent.
Charles Auguste Chasteauneuf born ~1822 Woolwich, Kent.
Robert Chasteauneuf born ~1834 Woolwich, Kent.
Theodore Thomas Chasteauneuf born 23 Oct 1839 Woolwich, Kent.
Louis Leon's wife, Susan nee Simpson, born 12 May 1804 Woolwich, Kent.

Secondly:
I have a sneeking suspicion Plumstead may have been in Lewisham rather than Woolwich, but am not sure? Please don't let me waste your time.  ???
Am looking for the following people in 1851/1861/1891 censi, who I know are at 39 Patteson Road, Plumstead in 1871 and 5 Conduit Road, Plumstead in 1881. As I know Hannah was born in Plumstead before 1851 they MUST be there then.
William Allen Foreman Of Engine Fitters born ~1822 Kensing or Kingson, Kent.
He married Caroline born ~1820 Milton, Nuthurst, Sussex. Children of William Allen and Caroline are:
Hannah "Annie" Allen born 1847-1849 Plumstead, Kent.
William Allen born ~1854 Plumstead, Kent.
Edwin John R Allen born ~Mar 1856 Plumstead, Kent, London. Died ~Sep 1889 Woolwich.
Elizabeth Allen born ~1857 Plumstead, Kent.
Robert Frederick Allen born ~Jun 1861 Plumstead, Kent.
Thanks,
Geoff.

I've replied by PM to queries regarding KEAST and CHASTEAUNEUF(+ variant).

The marriage (Mitchell and Sudds) is too time-consuming to research, given the population of the area, and the consequent number of churches. Would suggest that you try the 1901 census and work backwards in time to get your info.

Mitchell: The 1861 census is not name-indexed in Plumstead; 1851 *is* should you wish to place a request on the lookup board (lewisham district).  51/71 addresses can be checked in the '61 census.
