« on: Saturday 25 February 17 09:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Im having problems identifying my Gr grandfathers military.. I have found this (Thomas Roache F/25638) on another page, but the name is spelt different so I'm not 100% but i also have this photo of him, I'm not sure if its a war medal or a name tag, and would be grateful for any help. On the back of the photo it is dated 1919

It might be better to give what you know about your Grandfather.

I think MaxD's reply is the best guess. I would agree that out of all of the 15 Star recipients he his the closest to being your man.
Quote
Denise - you have seen I think that in the absence of detailed service records, who your man is becomes a guessing game.  I've looked again at the five Thomas Roches who earned the 14-15 Star whose medal records can be found and find that four of them left the service before April 1919.  The fifth (the one I said was my first on the list) L/15815 Pte Thomas Roche of the Middlesex Regiment does not have a discharge date against his medal listing.  That is not proof that he was still serving after the war but tends to push thoughts that way.  Also, his service number indicates that he joined the army in June 1915 as a regular soldier (the L/ prefix indicates this) into the 4th Battalion (the Middx has four regular battalions at the start of the war), ending in the 2nd Battalion, also a regular battalion.  What does all this prove, only that I can join the dots, whether this is your Thomas James Newman Roche, I don't know.  If you have £30 to spare, which is what it costs to find a post 1920 service record, then go for it, perhaps after more digging at other sources such as mancpal suggests.  https://www.gov.uk/guidance/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records#service-records-of-deceased-service-personnel

Your call, good luck.maxD

Another bit of good guidance Jim.  I thought I'd seen his picture before!

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
