Charles Andrews
« on: Thursday 02 March 17 12:22 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking information on my great grandfather Charles Andrews who died at the age of 33 on 8th August 1894 in Portsmouth,He had a 'partner' Rachel Humm & daughters by her but no evidence of a marriage.
He seems to have worked as a labourer within a theatre or even a bill poster.Having difficulty in establishing a birth record.Any assistance as always greatly appreciated.Thank you.David

Do you have him anywhere on census to give a possible area of birth

Yes, his 'wife' had the name of Rachel Charlotte Amelia Humm..she used various versions of this over the years. In Kellys  directory for Portsmouth sometimes recorded as Andrews sometimes Humm!

I keep coming back to Charles Andrews, a Pastry Cook/Confectioner, a Patient in the Royal Portsmouth Portsea and Gosport Hospital in 1881 Census.

looking at  birth records there is only 1 for Portsmouth Charles James Andrews Jun 1860 but he died in 1861.
There are 2 Charles Andrews in the time period Charles Andrews Mar 1859 Southampton 2c 36
and Charles Andrews Dec 1860 S Stoneham 2c 56. I guess its a process of elimination trying to track these guys forward & see what happened to them..?

Charles Andrews 1859 appears to be with his mother Ann in 1901
Charles Andrews  1860 appears to be with a wife Isabella in 1881

Anybody got any further suggestions?

Perhaps if he had a wife Isabella that would explain why he couldnt marry Rachel.

Have you followed that one forward to see if he is still with Isabella in subsequent censuses and thus can be ruled out?
