Alfred Wells Smith
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 12:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have Alfred Wells Smith death 28 Oct 1960 Skerton Lancaster (DOB abt 1875) probate to widow Jane Slee Smith. Marriage 1925 (age abt 50) Lancaster Jane Slee Dunstan. The only Alfred Wells Smith that I can find was born abt 1876 in Long Marton Westmoreland and if this is my Alfred then it looks that he was married first in 1908 Lancaster to Elizabeth Longton, both on the 1911 census. I have found a few deaths for an Elizabeth Smith between 1911 and 1925 but these could be anyone. Hope someone can help with this one.

Hi Kevin,

Tell us about the 1911 Census. We are not allowed to look up 'for you' and post the details - but you can, you are allowed to tell us what you know.

1911: Elizabeth SMITH nee LONGTON

How old is she?
Where is she born?
Where are they?

I see from GRO:
Thomas Longton SMITH birth reg Sep Qtr 1909, Lancaster, mms Longton
Alfred Wells SMITH birth reg. Mar Qtr 1912, Lancaster, mms Longton
Robert SMITH birth reg. Jun Qtr  1914, Lancaster, mms Longton

Taking a punt she died in the Lancaster Registration district between 1914 and 1925, narrows things down a bit:

Elizabeth SMITH:
age 35, Mar Qtr 1916, (b abt 1882)
age 45, Dec Qtr 1916, (b abt 1872)
age 46, Sep Qtr 1921, (b abt 1875)

Which one of those - if any - matches the age she is in 1911?

Cheers

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for that extra information.

Would say chances are fairly high, her death is aged 35 in 1916.

Have you seen the 1908 Marriage certificate?

I have the details - but perhaps you have it already?
She says she's 28 on that.

It looks like Elizabeth Longton's birth reg'd Mar.qtr. 1880 Lancaster - GRO has no mothers mmn suggesting she was illegitimate.    I note on her marriage it says in fathers name 'Jane (not James) Longton, confectioner which is strange - haven't seen a mother listed before - nor is there a James Longton who was a confectioner.

I do indeed think that Jane Longton was her mother - she was a confectioner on the last census - but as I can't see an online baptism think only Elizabeth's birth certificate could confirm.

So, Elizabeth's birth date is late 1879 or early 1880.

I would suggest that as Ambly has mentioned she is the Elizabeth Smith death Mar.1916 Lancaster or perhaps the one Dec.1921 Ulverston. Since Alfred didn't remarry until 1925 maybe the latter.
