Prerogative court of Canterbury wills famous people catalogue
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 14:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I have found a copy of a will that is listed as being in the Famous People records catalogue. How would you find out why they were famous? I have searched for the person but can't see what he was famous for.

Regards

Jon

Hi

His name was John Potter Sargeant. He was a surgeon and died in 1846. There is a court case at the old Baileys from about 1864 in which the accused are charged with impersonation. I don't know if that was where the famous person bit is from or something else.

Jon

From TNA website
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D106628

Is it Ancestry that is listing it as famous persons  :-\
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=5111

Yes I think it was. At the bottom it lists where the collection it came from. It is listed on two collections, one says Canterbury wills famous people.

Regards

Jon

It actually says selected wills of famous people.

On Ancestry the  "Wills of Selected Famous People" are chosen from the box on the right. John Potter Sargeant is not in the selection, he is just in the ordinary list. PROB 11 : Will Registers

Hello Jon,

I wondered if you may still be looking into John Potter Sargeant? I know this thread is 2 years old, but recently I came across some more information, but perhaps you have it also.

Regards,
James
