Is the following relevant?
Page 27 of Photography in Dublin during the Victorian Era by Edward Chandler (Albertine Kennedy Publishing )shows a photograph with 2 top hatted D.M.P. men with the caption " Where Spollen hid the money. Broadstone Station one of a series of stereocards showing various locations relating to a famous murder trial in 1857.

Galway girl, do you have any information on the Mary Spollen mentioned at the start of this thread who went to America and was living with the Gallagher family in Brooklyn in the 1940 US census. I assume she was also a sister of your Nan. Any photos she may have sent home showing her lodging with the Gallaghers?

I have her living with Gallaghers in 1940 cenus found that record
I also have her as a resident of Somers New York
My mam told me she was an Accoutant and worked for Edison in New york
The family in america lost touch due to her sister Kathleen developing Dementia and then Molly developed similar after she retired.
The story is pretty stark
She collapsed outside a Barber shop in the Bronx in early 80's and and the barber came looking for her family in Ireland along with a solictor.
She is buried in Somers New York
I am trying to get copies of finally details from my relations in America

Galway girl, thanks for the replies. Sorry, I should have said to you her surname on the 1940 US census was spelled SPOLEN instead of Spollen. Also as you say, she is recorded on the 1940 census as working for Brooklyn Edison Utilities. She also indicates on the census return that she was living at that same address (42 Sterling Place Brooklyn) with the Gallagher family in 1935, which means she was with the Gallaghers for at least 5 years,a long time to lodge with someone unless they had a good working/living/sharing relationship. Here's hoping your cousin in America can turn up photos of her time spent with the Gallaghers.

Regards.

That is interesting to know thank you.
I wonder how long she lived with Gallaghers myself because in 1970's 80's she was homeless living on the streets in the bronx as a bag lad and was taken in by a complete stranger who took care of her all she had was her personal belongings her sister Kathleen had died in 1968 from Alzheimer and no one in the family could find Molly in New York until she died and a solicitor put an announcement in The Irish Times looking for her family. The only living relatives were her sisters Sally and Madeline were in Ireland in 1984. Paddy, Jimmy and Benny, Kathleen were all dead.
So as a family we had no contact with Molly from about 1967. Madeline had returned to Ireland and Kathleen had early onset Alzheimer. An american lawyer and the man who took her in and cared for her came to Ireland with a very tragic story about her finally years in 1984.

I have her records from Workhouse in ireland in 1916 and She became a bookkepper then an accountant. She was extremely wealthy women when she died. Put we have no idea from late 60's to 83 what happened to her and hopefully we will piece together her final years and life. We believe she had like her sister Dementia or Alzheimer disease similar to Kathleen.
