lincolnshire mental asylum Ada Davis/ Grimsby
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 10:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm stumped trying to find a death certificate and what happened to  my 2nd great grandmother
she was Ada Davis born abt 1882 (Census) Her father was the prominent port missionary of Grimsby James Davis 1849 1914 (harbour of rescue. load in the newspapers about him)

She was married to William Adkin Andrew in 1911 (seaman) she was aged about 29/30 and had a daughter Marjorie my nan in 1912. there is a possible baby born and died 1914 but until I get the birth cert I don't know if its hers. Her husband William went in the merchant navy about 1918 and moved to Belgium alone.
At some point she was put into a mental asylum and my nan was raised by family.
I know she stayed in the mental home until death and I believed she may have lived until about 80 years old.
I only know it was a lincolnshire asylum probably Lincoln maybe boston. I would like to find at least a death certificate for her and where she might have been and why she was detained all her life. Presumable she was alright for the first 30 years of her life. she resided with her father at the mission house in Grimsby upto 1911 census but after that I have nothing else.
I hope someone might be able to shed some light. Seems strange she disappeared of the radar.

Hi Gwen

If your assumptions about her age and death are correct, she should be on the 1939 register.

Have you looked there?

If she is there, you can double check her date of birth, give or take a few years sometinmes, and find a possible birth in the gro index.

You can now search the gro birth index on the gro site and find the mothers maiden names before 1911

I think the birth in 1914 is a strong possibility especially as the first name is same as the fathers.

If her husband left her it's possible she remarried and died under a different surname.

I think it was boston as my aunty vagley remembers her mother visiting ada once in Boston just before she died. She said she thinks she was in her 80's

So, in 1891 there's an absolute hoard of them living at 67 Thesiger St, Caistor, Lincs, mother born Bilston, second youngest sister born Grimsby, everyone else born Wolverhampton. Given the way the offspring are listed, with two 11yo girls born in different places, I'm suspecting a "combined" family maybe.

Possible births are:
DAVIS, ADA        MANDER     GRO Reference: 1881  S Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Vol 06B  Page 609
DAVIS, ADA        EVANS      GRO Reference: 1881  D Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Vol 06B  Page 519

Looking for a marriage between James Davis and Mary A. Mander or Evans, probably in Wolverhampton or Bilston we have:

JAMES DAVIS Q3 1870 born 1849 married Mary Ann Evans born 1848, Wolverhampton Staffordshire Vol 6B Page 656
Also: 17 Jul 1870, Father George Davis, Spouse's father Herbert Evans

Possible children:
James, 1871  M Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 519
Herbert, 1872  J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 512
Elizabeth Jane, 1873  D Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 501
John, 1874  M Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 665
George William, 1875  J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 535
Joseph, 1876  J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 700
Alfred, 1877  S Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 543
Alfred Thomas, 1878  D Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 648
Mary Ann, 1879  D Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 564
Ada, 1881  D Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 519
Ethel Georgina, 1885  J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 542

There were others but the "fit" wasn't good enough for the 1891 household. There are still a couple of anomalies for you to sort out via the 1881 census, and I'm not sure who Eva is on the 1891, but from searching the GRO index she doesn't appear to be a Davis nor yet an Evans born in either Grimsby or Wolverhampton.

Next, Ada's marriage:
ADA DAVIS and William A Andrew, Grimsby Lincs, Q3 1911, Volume 7A Page 1427

And their possible children:
ANDREW, MARJORIE,       DAVIS, 1912  D Quarter, GRIMSBY  Volume 07A  Page 1069
ANDREW, WILLIAM  JAMES, DAVIS, 1914  M Quarter, GRIMSBY  Volume 07A  Page 1155
Also this, but the age at death is wrong .. unless it is a typo for 6mo ...
ANDREW, WILLIAM  JAMES age 6, 1914  S Quarter in GRIMSBY  Volume 07A  Page 633

I've drawn a blank on the 1939 Register, but here are links for the Kesteven assylum near Sleaford (not far from Boston) and the one nearer Lincoln:

Stitch
thanks

Eva Davis was definitely the youngest of the Davis siblings the only one born in Grimsby as they moved from wolverhampton to become the port missionary in Grimsby.
Eva was the one who raised my nan. She married Augustus huxford.
Mary Ann their mother died in 1899 in grimsby and James remarried a Martha 1900 Ive got lots of this info from press cuttings as they were quite well known in Grimsby for their port missionary work
in 1911 James and martha and Elizabeth 36 and eva 29 are recorded as living in thesigar street that was the mission house in Grimsby.
Yes ada married william in 1911 and had marjorie. the baby william who died could be hers and coupled with the death of her father also 1914 could have destabilized her ???
I dont think the william aged 6  could be hers.
Her husband turns up again in Grimsby with a new woman eva (Aunty remembers) when my nan was married.
I guestimate Ada would have died late 50s early 60s.

I'm interestd in the ada Davis (evans) you mentioned as all the ones ive found have had no mothers name recored on find my past.
ill check the 1881 census i havent got a joseph,  Got one Alfred not two.
Greats thank
Gwen
