My 3 x great grandfather Hugh Chapman, born 1797 at Old Cleeve, Somerset, (baptist 29th October 1797 at Old Cleeve. He was working for the parish clerk for 50 or 56 years at Old Cleeve. Have you got any information about him at the Parish clerk in Old Cleeve. His death was 19th September 1875, aged 75 years. Do you know what his wife name was?  maybe Sarah??

Regards
Valerie

The only Hugh Chapman I can see in the censuses 1841/51/61/71 has a wife Hannah.
In 1841 anyone over 15 years plus had their ages marked down to the nearest 5.
HO107 Piece 965 book 7 folio 9 Page 11
Old Cleeve Williton registration district.
 Hugh Chapman  40 Cordwainer
 Hannah Chapman  40
 Fredric Chapman  20
 Susan Chapman  15
 Charlotte Chapman  10
 Sarah Chapman  15
 James Chapman  8
 Carles Chapman  5
 Ann Chapman  3
 N K Chapman  Days 4
All born in county

It is only in the 1871 census that reference is made to his church work. he is entered asParish Clerk and shoe maker. Hannah is still alive.

The unnamed baby 4 days old in the 1841 census is a female so I searched on the GRO index for a female child birth registered in the March/June 1/4's in the Williton registration district (as per the 1841 census and FreeBMD which shows Old Cleeve being in the Williton registration district.
One result Elizabeth Chapman birth registered Jun 1/4 1841 mother's maiden name Burton.

Added: There is a 9 year old Elizabeth in the family in 1851 census.

I would imagine the only way to discover if Hugh was a layman worker at the Old Cleeve parish church is to find out if the church still exists and whether any old church records still exist.
yes the church does exist and dates from the 12 century (see Wikipedia)
The church's web site is here http://www.fivechurches.co.uk/
There are contact phone numbers.
