Would be good to see the whole certificate.  However, it seems to me that it's possible that the permission for Claude has been written by one person and that, although it says "Signed, John Walsh" that it is not his signature. I have official letters sent by some of my family in the late 1800s and early 1900s  where the letters have obviously been transcribed and the 'signatures' are written in by the person who has actually done the writing - somewhat similar to some of today's digital letter writing where the 'signature' is not physically hand-written by the sender.  The capital "W"s in the letter, both in the body of the letter  and in both signatures are quite distinctive.

Could the letter have been written by Margaret? Or even by Claude himself - the capital "C" is similar although the rest of the penmanship isn't quite  the same.

In my family's case the letters were written by someone else as the actual sender didn't want to show that he was illiterate.

The signature of Margaret on the marriage certificate contains the second  a after g.

The signature on the permission omits it.

Both her "signatures" show proficiency with a pen, while CHEGDWEENEN's  lacks it notably.

Needs reminding exactly where to sign after misplacing his first name.

Almost writes 3 d's in the middle of the surname.

The strange spelling with the  d in it occurs on some of the birth registrations. Perhaps he was the person registering them

I have the impression that, at least at the time of signing the marriage certificate, John CHEGWIDDEN was hardly literate - only enough to write his name with difficulty.  It looks also as though Margaret has had to add the 'a' into her name, before finishing it, in the marriage certificate.

This marriage looks a possibility for the parents of John CHEGWIDDEN.
I do not see a birth for him however.
